The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has released a draft for a new mandatory national standard regarding the safety requirements for fuel cell electric vehicles. This initiative follows the widespread deployment of fuel cell commercial and heavy-duty vehicles across diverse environments, including tunnels and highways.
The proposed standard introduces a strict limit on hydrogen emissions, mandating that the vehicle hydrogen emission rate must not exceed 8.0%. This measure is designed to ensure safety in semi-enclosed spaces like tunnels, based on theoretical calculations and experimental validation of current mainstream vehicle models.
Furthermore, the revision mandates the inclusion of hydrogen refueling communication functions for vehicles equipped with 70MPa high-pressure hydrogen storage systems. This requirement aims to prevent overheating during refueling, which can damage Type IV storage cylinders and reduce their operational lifespan.
The new regulations address technical gaps in previous standards, specifically targeting the integration of advanced technologies such as 70MPa storage and Type IV cylinders. By establishing these mandatory safety baselines, the government intends to standardize safety design logic across the industry.
