The Chinese Ministry of Commerce confirmed that the agreement reached with the European Union regarding hybrid vehicles is based on mutual benefit and reciprocity. The consensus adheres to three core principles established under World Trade Organization rules: full compliance throughout the process, respect for facts, and non-discrimination.
The agreement aims to protect the interests of Chinese enterprises and prevent the escalation of trade tensions between China and the EU. According to the Ministry, such rule-based consultations demonstrate that both parties can resolve disputes and foster deeper economic cooperation, contributing to balanced trade growth.
The understanding was finalized following intensive discussions held on October 8–9, 2026, in Beijing. The meetings involved China's Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentao, and the European Commission's Executive Vice-President for Trade and Economic Security, Maros Sefcovic, under the framework of the China-EU trade and investment consultation mechanism.
The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers issued a formal statement on October 14, expressing support for the outcomes of these negotiations. The association noted that the consensus covers both hybrid and electric vehicles, emphasizing that the discussions were conducted in a spirit of mutual respect and equal consultation.
