Chery has initiated a recall for 8,878 Omoda 5 crossovers in Malaysia following reports of rear axle detachment. This marks the second recall for the model related to this specific defect, with a previous campaign in 2024 involving 600 vehicles.

The issue stems from insufficient strength in the welding points of the rear axle trailing arms, which poses a risk of rupture under extreme conditions. The automaker confirmed that the affected design has been discontinued, and the current recall covers the C and H variants of the model.

In response to the safety concerns, Malaysia’s Road Transport Department has suspended the Vehicle Type Approval for the Omoda 5, effectively halting new registrations of the vehicle until the investigation concludes. Chery is offering free inspections and component replacements for affected units.

The company is also extending these inspection protocols to 2023 models sold in other international markets. While the incident in Johor Bahru involving a 2023 model resulted in no injuries, the automaker continues to work with local regulators to address the technical failure.
