Chery is recalling 8,878 Omoda 5 SUVs in Malaysia following an incident where a rear axle detached from a vehicle while in motion. The company identified that welds on the rear axle trailing arms may lack sufficient strength, posing a risk of rupture under extreme conditions.
The Malaysian Road Transport Department has suspended new registrations and the Vehicle Type Approval for the Omoda 5 model until the investigation concludes. Authorities are conducting technical audits of the production line and the component supplier involved in the assembly.
The recall affects specific C and H variants of the Omoda 5. Chery stated that the model has been discontinued in Malaysia and replaced by the O5, which features a different rear suspension design. The company is also performing precautionary checks on the same production batch in China and other markets.
This marks the second recall for the Omoda 5 in Malaysia related to rear axle issues. In April 2024, Chery recalled 600 vehicles after a similar detachment incident, which was linked to improperly calibrated welding equipment at the time.
