Chery Malaysia has launched a recall campaign for 8,878 pre-facelift Omoda 5 vehicles due to potential issues with rear-axle weld strength. The company identified a risk of weld failure at the trailing-arm joints under operating stress. Owners are eligible for free inspections and component replacements where necessary.

The Malaysian Road Transport Department has temporarily suspended the Vehicle Type Approval for the affected petrol Omoda 5 models. This measure halts new registrations for these specific units while an investigation and safety assessment are underway. The suspension does not apply to the entire Chery vehicle lineup.

This new campaign follows a 2024 inspection effort that covered 600 vehicles assembled at the Inokom plant. In that instance, Chery cited an improperly calibrated welding tip as the cause for incomplete weld penetration. The company has not yet clarified the technical connection between the 2024 findings and the 2026 recall.

The recalled units are equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, a CVT, and a torsion-beam rear axle. Newer models, including the facelifted Chery O5 and the electric Omoda E5, feature independent multi-link rear suspension and are excluded from the current campaign. Chery is also screening other export markets for affected components.
