The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued whistleblower awards totaling over $150 million. These funds are sourced from the agency's Customer Protection Fund and compensate individuals who provided information leading to enforcement actions against fraud in commodity and futures markets.
Since the program began in 2014, total payouts have exceeded $395 million, contributing to over $3.3 billion in monetary sanctions. The largest single award in the program's history was nearly $200 million in 2021, related to the LIBOR scandal. In fiscal year 2024, the agency distributed approximately $42 million across 12 awards.
On June 1, 2026, the CFTC awarded over $8 million to five whistleblowers, following a December 19, 2025, payout of more than $1.8 million to two individuals. The agency maintains strict confidentiality for all whistleblowers to protect them from potential retaliation.
On September 11, 2026, the CFTC finalized a rule setting a default 30% award for claims not exceeding $5 million. This threshold covers more than 80% of the program's payouts. The agency has recently expanded its oversight to include digital asset derivatives and crypto spot market fraud.
