Centralized exchanges saw a broad recovery in August, with most major platforms reporting double-digit percentage increases in spot trading volume. This market-wide momentum was largely driven by a Bitcoin price rally of more than 30% during the month.
Coinbase led the recovery with a 36% month-over-month surge in spot volume. KuCoin followed with a 23% gain, while Binance grew its spot volume by 21% to reach $227 billion, maintaining a market share of roughly 28%.
Despite the rebound, overall volumes remain lower than the peaks observed in 2025. The industry faces structural headwinds as spot ETFs and digital asset treasury products absorb institutional capital that would otherwise flow through centralized exchange order books.
The shift in institutional flows is particularly impacting Bitcoin and Ethereum trading volumes on CEXs. However, altcoin demand continues to support these platforms, as new token launches still rely on centralized listings for visibility and liquidity.
