Munich-based database startup CedarDB has launched limited availability of its cloud offering, CedarDB Cloud. The company, which originated as a spinout from the Technical University of Munich, focuses on a database engine capable of handling both transactional and analytical queries simultaneously.
The startup was founded by five researchers from the Umbra project. The platform is designed to be compatible with PostgreSQL, aiming to reduce switching costs for enterprises. The company previously released CedarDB Enterprise and the free CedarDB Community Edition in May 2025.
In May 2025, CedarDB announced a seed funding round of €5.3 million, which is approximately $6 million. The team currently consists of 14 employees. CEO Moritz Sichert indicated that the company plans to expand its headcount as it gains more traction and prepares for a future funding round.
CedarDB is currently competing in the Startup Battlefield at TechCrunch Disrupt. The company aims to address the growing demand for unified data architectures, a trend also observed by larger players like Databricks, which recently introduced its own LTAP architecture to combine transaction and analytical data.
