An explosion occurred at the Intel Fab 28 facility in Israel on October 14, 2026, resulting in at least two deaths and one serious injury. The incident involved a fire, and local authorities are currently investigating the cause, with initial reports pointing to a potential malfunction during a gas transfer process.
The facility is a key production site for Intel, manufacturing processors using the 10-nanometer Intel 7 process. Current output includes 13th and 14th generation Core chips, as well as 5th generation Xeon and Xeon 6 server processors. The plant also produces 5G modems.
While the exact cause remains under investigation, fire services identified the presence of nitrogen trifluoride, a gas used for cleaning semiconductor equipment. Police have stated there is no immediate evidence of criminal activity or negligence. Intel has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The impact on production schedules remains unclear as of October 15, 2026. Intel has faced previous challenges with the Intel 7 and 10nm processes since 2025. Additionally, the status of the nearby Fab 38 construction project, which received $3.25 billion in state funding, remains uncertain following its 2024 suspension.
