Cardano has officially adopted the x402 payment standard as of September 21. This integration enables autonomous AI agents and applications to conduct direct payments for online services using the ADA cryptocurrency. The standard, originally developed by Coinbase in 2025 and now governed by the Linux Foundation, utilizes the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code to facilitate automated transaction handshakes.
Engineers from the Cardano Foundation completed the development of the client, server, and facilitator components following the integration of the network specification into the x402 repository on September 9. The system allows agents to request paid resources, such as datasets or API calls, and settle payments on-chain without the need for traditional checkout processes or API keys.
A real transaction has already been processed on the Cardano pre-production test network, though the mainnet deployment is currently pending. Developers can now access the official TypeScript package via npm, with plans to introduce Python support in the future. The project aims to position Cardano as a settlement layer for machine-to-machine commerce alongside existing networks like XRP Ledger and Solana.
The market responded to the announcement with a 4% increase in the price of ADA over a 24-hour period, reaching a four-month high. Analysts observed that this movement coincided with the asset breaking through a multi-year resistance level. While the ecosystem for autonomous agent payments remains experimental, Cardano has now established a technical foundation within this emerging sector.
