Aiden Pleterski, known as Canada's 'Crypto King,' will represent himself during a four-week fraud and money laundering trial in Toronto. Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru denied a request to postpone the proceedings, which are scheduled to begin in June 2025. The judge stated he will take an enhanced role to ensure a fair trial by raising objections on behalf of the defendant.
Pleterski faced charges in May 2024, including fraud over $5,000 and money laundering, following an investigation by the Ontario Securities Commission and Durham Regional Police. His associate, Colin Murphy, also faces a fraud charge. Pleterski was previously forced into bankruptcy in 2022 after investors sought to recover approximately $40 million, of which only $3 million was returned to 160 investors.
A report by the trustee, Grant Thornton, alleged that Pleterski invested less than 2% of the funds while spending nearly $16 million on personal expenses, claims the defendant disputes. Additionally, Pleterski was kidnapped in late 2022 by individuals demanding a $3 million ransom. One of the suspects involved in the abduction pleaded guilty last year.
