California set a new grid dispatch record on October 6, reaching 745 MW. Tesla and Sunrun reported that home batteries provided the majority of this power to support the grid during a heat wave.
Data from October 6 shows that over 85,000 Tesla Powerwall owners contributed more than 600 MW to the grid. This combined effort exceeded the previous record of 580 MW set in September.
Sunrun currently has over 120,000 home batteries enrolled in California grid programs. The company noted that the October 5 event marked the first time DSGS and ELRP programs were triggered simultaneously.
The surge in capacity is attributed to the adoption of the Powerwall 3, which offers 11.5 kW output, and installations featuring multiple battery units per household.
A new project in San Jose, funded by Google, aims to enroll nearly 21,000 devices. This initiative is part of a broader 16.8 GW virtual power plant plan announced by Tesla, Sunrun, and Renew Home.
