ByteDance has obtained a $29.6 billion loan from nearly 30 banks, marking one of the largest corporate financing packages in Asia this year. The three-year unsecured loan was coordinated by Citigroup and JPMorgan, with participation from banks in China, the US, Europe, and Singapore. While the company initially sought $20 billion, high lender demand increased the final amount.

The funds are designated for general corporate purposes, though sources indicate a significant portion will support AI initiatives and data center expansion outside of China. ByteDance has already become an offtaker for several data centers in Southeast Asia, committing to purchase specific amounts of computing capacity to help developers finance their projects.

The company is currently competing with local hyperscalers in AI infrastructure and global players like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Microsoft in the development of multimodal AI models. To strengthen its supply network, ByteDance has discussed purchasing AI inference chips from Baidu and the Shanghai-based company Iluvatar CoreX.

This financing is significantly larger than the company's previous global loan in September 2024, when it raised $10.8 billion from approximately 20 lenders. The current loan is the second-largest in Asia this year, following SoftBank's $40 billion financing in March for OpenAI investments.
