BYD is expanding the availability of its Racco electric microcar beyond Japan, targeting right-hand drive markets. The company has opened order books in Macau and scheduled an official launch in Sri Lanka for October 9. This move follows the model's initial release in Japan, where it secured over 2,000 orders within two months.
The Racco is engineered to comply with Japanese Kei car regulations, featuring dimensions of 3395 by 1475 by 1800 mm and a 2,520 mm wheelbase. It is equipped with a 47 kW motor and offers two battery options, 22.4 kWh and 35.84 kWh, providing a WLTC range of up to 320 km. The vehicle is priced starting at ¥2.145 million, approximately $13,600.
BYD has sold over 10,000 vehicles in Japan since entering the market. While the company is evaluating further international expansion for the Racco, it currently excludes left-hand drive markets, including China, due to competitive pricing pressures. Future growth is expected to focus on regions where Kei-style vehicles are already established.
