Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, published a post on X on September 13, 2026, regarding the intersection of mechanism design theory and AI safety. He suggests a structural similarity between managing human agents in governance systems and controlling advanced AI models.
Buterin identifies a duality in principal-agent problems. In governance, static algorithms manage human agents, while in AI safety, humans manage powerful large language models. In both cases, a less capable entity attempts to control a more capable one.
The author proposes that anti-collusion tools used in governance, such as quadratic voting, commit-reveal schemes, and identity verification, could be applied to AI safety. These mechanisms aim to prevent agents from coordinating in ways that bypass oversight.
This analysis follows Buterin's February 2026 proposal regarding the use of AI stewards in DAO governance. He previously explored connections between public goods and market design, as well as identity theory and tokenomics.
Buterin notes that while the structural analogy is relevant, the capability gap between human agents in DeFi and frontier AI models remains significant. The post does not mention specific protocols, tokens, or companies.
