Bucharest has secured €87.44 million in non-repayable funding from the Modernisation Fund to upgrade its public transport fleet. The European Investment Bank has designated the project as a priority investment, with the city responsible only for covering value-added tax costs.
The procurement plan includes 40 battery-electric buses and 45 new trolleybuses. The electric bus order consists of 20 units measuring 12 metres and 20 units measuring 10 metres. These vehicles will replace older Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses equipped with Euro-3 diesel engines.
Additionally, the city intends to acquire ten new trams to replace existing V3A(M) models. The 45 new trolleybuses are intended to phase out older Astra-Ikarus vehicles. Mayor Ciprian Ciucu noted that expanding charging infrastructure is the next priority to ensure immediate deployment.
Bucharest has been actively electrifying its fleet. Earlier in 2026, the city received 22 Yutong U12 battery-trolleybuses capable of traveling 20 km on battery power. Previous acquisitions include 100 Solaris Trollino 12 trolleybuses and an order for 100 battery-electric buses from Karsan.
