Validators on the BNB Smart Chain began implementing a capacity upgrade on September 14, with completion expected by September 15. The primary objective is to increase the target block gas limit to 70 million to accommodate network utilization that currently exceeds 95%.
This update follows the Pasteur hard fork, which went live on August 25, 2026. The fork introduced BEP-675 and the BidBlock V2 system, allowing builders to submit pre-executed blocks. Currently, BidBlock V2 handles approximately 98% of network blocks, showing a 28% average increase in gas per block.
The new 70 million gas limit is calculated dynamically by validators based on real-time conditions rather than a static value. This approach requires validators to optimize their block-packing and simulation strategies to manage the increased data load effectively.
The network has already surpassed a 55 million gas limit. Developers have established a roadmap for further scaling, with plans to potentially increase the limit to 80 million and 90 million gas per block, depending on future performance data from the mainnet.
