BMW officially confirmed its plans to expand the Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup with a new entry-level model. The company announced this during its Capital Markets Day, noting that the vehicle will focus on the European market.
The new electric car is scheduled for release in 2028. According to internal reports, the vehicle is currently codenamed NBO and will likely be a five-door hatchback marketed as the i1. It will share the Neue Klasse platform with the iX3 and i3.
The model will feature both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. It is expected to occupy a market position between the MINI Cooper Electric and the iX1 or iX2. BMW may also introduce an i2 electric sedan around 2030.
The i1 is primarily designed for Europe, while the potential i2 sedan could be offered in the US market. Meanwhile, BMW has opened orders for the 2027 i3 sedan and iX3 SUV, both starting at $61 500.
