Bluesky CEO Toni Schneider announced that the company has applied to ICANN to establish .bsky as a top-level internet domain. If the application is successful, users will be able to replace their current social media handles with shorter, personalized domain names ending in .bsky.
The application process overseen by ICANN is expected to take between 18 and 24 months to complete. The official publication of the submitted domain requests is scheduled for October 7, 2026.
Bluesky stated that it has not yet determined the specific mechanism for requesting or distributing these domains. However, the company confirmed that it does not intend to sell or monetize the .bsky domain names.
COO Rose Wang emphasized that the initiative aligns with the company's mission to allow users to maintain control over their online identity. By providing these domains, Bluesky aims to transform user profiles into comprehensive personal home pages.
