BlackRock has processed over $5 billion in direct Bitcoin-to-IBIT conversions as of August 2026. This volume represents a growth of more than 60% compared to the $3 billion recorded in October 2025.

The surge in activity follows a July 2026 policy change where BlackRock reduced the minimum transaction size for in-kind swaps from $25 million to $1 million. This adjustment expanded access to high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and smaller funds.

The program allows holders to exchange Bitcoin for iShares Bitcoin Trust shares without executing a market sale. This mechanism avoids immediate capital gains tax events by treating the transaction as a like-kind exchange, deferring tax liability until the shares are sold.

By moving assets into IBIT, investors shift custodial responsibility to Coinbase and integrate their Bitcoin exposure into standard brokerage infrastructure. These shares can be used as collateral, lent, or margined, similar to traditional securities.

BlackRock leverages its distribution network and relationships with institutional advisors to facilitate these conversions. While other issuers are exploring similar programs, BlackRock maintains its position as the largest US spot Bitcoin ETF by assets and flows.
