Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, suggests that most macroeconomic scenarios are favorable for Bitcoin. He compares the current economic landscape to a choose-your-own-adventure book, noting that various outcomes for interest rates and AI development generally support the asset's long-term growth.
In a scenario of AI-driven abundance, Hougan categorizes Bitcoin alongside scarce assets like gold, art, and coastal land. If an AI bubble bursts and leads to a recession, he expects an initial decline followed by a recovery driven by monetary easing, balance sheet expansion, and increased money supply.
For a moderate growth scenario of 3% with 4% interest rates, the analyst anticipates further appreciation. This would be fueled by ETF inflows, adoption by financial advisors, and the integration of Bitcoin into corporate and sovereign balance sheets. Federal Reserve policy shifts, including inflation or rate changes, are also seen as leaving room for growth.
Hougan acknowledges that Bitcoin will not necessarily rise in a straight line, citing historical volatility like the 50% drop during the 2020 COVID-19 panic. He identifies potential risks to the asset, specifically mentioning the threat of quantum computing to legacy wallets and the possibility of stricter regulatory environments.
