According to River, 81% of the total Bitcoin supply has remained inactive for at least six months. This indicates that only about 3.7 million BTC out of the 19.7 million coins in circulation currently represent the active market float available for daily trading.
Data shows that long-term holders have accumulated over 3 million BTC since 2020. Despite a 50% price increase from the lows of June 2026, trading volumes have dropped by 30% year-to-date, suggesting that market participants are increasingly holding their assets.
Retail investors shifted their strategy in 2026, moving from a net sale of 140,000 BTC in the first half of the year to an accumulation of over 107,000 BTC in the third quarter. Mid-tier holders, known as dolphins, acquired more than 113,000 BTC since mid-July.
River Financial reports that its own reserves consist of approximately 33,737 BTC against liabilities of 33,499 BTC. The company maintains full Bitcoin reserves, reflecting the broader trend of reduced coin movement observed across the wider market.
