Bitcoin's options market has entered a period of relative stability. At-the-money (ATM) implied volatility (IV) is currently around 37%, indicating that traders expect limited price swings in the near term compared to the first half of 2026.

As of September 6, Glassnode data shows the 1-week ATM IV at 37.39% and the 1-month ATM IV at 37.69%. The 3-month ATM IV is 38.87%, while the 6-month figure stands at 40.01%. This structure suggests a normal term structure where uncertainty increases modestly over time.

The current state is a significant shift from June 2026, when ATM IV peaked at approximately 65%. This compression of volatility has made option premiums cheaper for buyers, reducing the cost of establishing directional positions or hedges.

However, out-of-the-money options maintain higher implied volatility than ATM options, creating a 'volatility smile'. This indicates that while the market is generally calm, traders are still pricing in protection against tail risks.

Most of this trading activity is concentrated on Deribit, the dominant venue for Bitcoin options by volume and open interest. The current market regime is confirmed by data from Glassnode, Block Scholes, and Amberdata.
