The market for Bitcoin-backed digital credit has grown to approximately $16 billion in size over the past two years. Dan Hillery from UTXO Management suggests that this financial layer built on top of the Bitcoin network could eventually reach a scale comparable to the network's own market capitalization, which currently stands at $1.5 trillion.
Hillery, speaking on The Allocators Edge, discussed the mechanics of variable-rate preferred securities such as STRC and SATA. These instruments are designed to remain anchored near a par value of $100 through buyback mechanisms. The discussion also highlighted the distinction between digital credit risk and digital equity risk.
UTXO Management is currently developing a structured credit fund that incorporates both senior and junior tranches. The fund aims to manage leverage and transfer volatility risk. Hillery noted that major institutional fund classes currently face limitations in accessing the digital credit market.
The analysis covers the role of short-duration Bitcoin-backed notes and the potential evolution of these products over the next five years. The discussion also addresses how these credit instruments might fit into a traditional 60/40 investment portfolio, considering liquidity and redemption factors.
