Binance has officially declined to comment on reports regarding alleged interference by European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde in the company's Greek licensing process. The exchange stated that it will not address speculation and maintains its commitment to securing regulatory authorization within the European Union under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, a vice chair of the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) claimed that Lagarde requested Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to deny the Binance application. Reports indicate that Greek officials had initially informed the European Securities and Markets Authority in early June of their intent to approve the license.
Binance originally submitted its application for a MiCA license in Greece in January. Following reports in mid-June that the HCMC intended to reject the bid and subsequent claims of intervention by Lagarde, the exchange withdrew its application. Binance announced it would pursue authorization in a different EU jurisdiction shortly before the July 1 MiCA deadline.
