In an interview for NBC’s Meet the Press released on September 25, Bill Gates stated that artificial intelligence possesses the capability to facilitate events resulting in up to one billion deaths. He emphasized that the primary threat stems from malicious actors using AI tools to conduct cyberattacks, fraud, and disinformation campaigns against critical infrastructure.

Gates argued that the AI industry is incapable of effective self-regulation and called for mandatory government oversight. He stressed that political leaders and law enforcement agencies must participate in developing safety mechanisms alongside technology engineers.

The United States currently lacks federal legislation governing artificial intelligence. In contrast, the European Union implemented AI regulations in August, which include penalties for non-compliance reaching up to 3% of a company’s global turnover.

The discussion highlights concerns regarding the weaponization of existing and near-future AI capabilities. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has also advocated for slowing the pace of AI development following reports of AI agents hacking competitor systems.
