The DeFi protocol Balancer has introduced a governance proposal, BIP-XXX, to initiate an orderly wind-down of its operations. The plan replaces a previously approved buyback program with a burn-to-redeem mechanism, allowing BAL token holders to destroy their tokens in exchange for a pro-rata share of the protocol’s $9 million treasury.
Operational shutdown will begin on October 30, 2026, when all liquidity pools transition to a withdrawals-only mode. Official contributor activities are scheduled to conclude on October 31, 2026. The protocol has allocated a budget of $150,000 to maintain essential operations through May 2027.
Distributions to token holders are set to commence at the end of May 2027, coinciding with the expiration of veBAL locks. The process will include an initial distribution, a subsequent airdrop, and a final asset sweep. Holders who have locked tokens for governance purposes must wait for their locks to expire before they can participate in the redemption.
The protocol’s history includes a major exploit in November 2025, which caused user losses estimated between $110 million and $128 million. Balancer Labs, the primary development entity, announced its own closure in March 2026. Despite the launch of the v3 upgrade, the protocol was unable to achieve sustainable long-term revenue levels.
