AWS reports triple-digit growth in its custom silicon division, with annualized sales projected to reach tens of billions of dollars. The company is currently considering direct sales of its Trainium chips to external organizations, moving beyond its traditional cloud-only model to support sovereign AI initiatives.
The Trainium3 accelerator, which launched on December 2, 2025, is currently sold out. It offers 4.4 times higher compute performance and four times the memory bandwidth compared to the previous Trainium2 generation.
Development of the Trainium4 chip is underway, with a target of 6 times the FP4 compute performance of its predecessor and a fourfold increase in memory bandwidth. Broad market availability for this new hardware is anticipated around 2027, with significant early reservations already recorded.
To compete with Nvidia's established CUDA ecosystem, AWS is focusing on its Neuron SDK and Neuron Kernel Interface. These software tools aim to simplify the migration of AI workloads for developers transitioning to Trainium hardware.
