Amazon Web Services has officially abandoned plans to construct a data center in Hood County, Texas. The decision followed the company's request for a tax abatement of up to 90 percent, which was intended to span a period of 30 years. A company representative confirmed that the site was one of several options under consideration.
Local officials expressed concerns regarding the project's transparency. County Commissioner Dave Eagle noted that while the developer initially promised job creation and infrastructure upgrades, they failed to provide specific details about the facility. Consequently, Eagle voted against the proposal, citing a lack of clarity during the negotiation process.
The project's technical specifications, including power capacity and resource consumption, remained undisclosed. This incident highlights broader challenges for data center development in Texas, where developers often seek tax incentives and utility access. According to Texas Tribune, at least 248 such projects are currently planned across the state.
