The board of directors at Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, has voted to place CEO Matt Mullenweg on mandatory leave. Following this decision, the company's Chief Financial Officer has assumed the role of interim CEO to oversee daily operations.
Mullenweg stated that he was notified of the board's resolution only 50 minutes before the meeting commenced. He has publicly accused board members of colluding to seize control of the company, claiming the decision was pushed through without prior consultation.
Despite being placed on leave, Mullenweg retains his position as a member of the board and will continue to participate in strategic decision-making. The board has confirmed the change in leadership but has not issued a formal response to the allegations of collusion.
The WordPress content management system remains an open-source project governed by its community. Consequently, the management changes at Automattic are not expected to have a direct impact on the development or operations of the WordPress project itself.
