Atari has officially launched a modern replica of its 1983 800XL 8-bit computer. The device is currently available for pre-order at a retail price of $219. The project is a collaboration between Atari, Retro Games Ltd., and Plaion.
The hardware features a mechanical keyboard and includes a joystick. It retains a functional cartridge slot, allowing users to play original Atari game cartridges on modern televisions. The system also comes with 25 pre-installed games and the Atari BASIC programming language.
Modern upgrades include four USB-A ports and HDMI output with support for 60Hz displays. Users can choose between 4:3 and pixel-perfect display modes. The system also supports contemporary features like instant save states and rewinding.
While retro hardware replicas have become a market trend, these devices typically rely on emulation rather than original circuit logic. Atari has not yet disclosed production volume details or plans for official distribution in the Chinese market.
