The ArtCraft project has introduced three open-source creative applications written in Rust: PhotoCraft for layer-based image editing, FilmCraft for video editing, and LightCraft for photo management and RAW processing. The project repository was established on September 30, with support for Linux, Windows, and macOS, and partial availability for web browsers and FreeBSD.
Developers utilized AI coding agents, including Claude Code, to accelerate the development process, resulting in frequent updates within the first week. PhotoCraft features support for layers, masks, text, vector tools, and brushes, and it can open, edit, and save PSD files. Developers report that 307 test PSD files maintained consistent rendering after processing.
LightCraft provides non-destructive RAW editing, color adjustments, and library management using a 32-bit floating-point color workflow. FilmCraft includes timeline editing, multi-camera support, keyframes, and audio mixing. However, the team estimates its functional completion at 87% compared to Premiere, with real-world project readiness estimated at only 50% to 60%.
The software is licensed under MIT or Apache 2.0. The developers emphasize that the code was rewritten from scratch in Rust and contains no proprietary Adobe assets. Currently, FilmCraft lacks plugin support, is limited to H.264 encoding, and lacks hardware decoding on Windows and Linux. The project remains in an early stage of development.
