Arizona Public Service (APS) has signed a contract extension with Navajo Transitional Energy Co. to keep the Four Corners coal-fired power plant operational until 2038. The facility was previously scheduled for decommissioning in 2031.
The decision was disclosed during a Resource Planning Advisory Committee meeting held on Wednesday. This move reverses the utility's earlier commitment to retire the plant, extending its lifespan by seven years.
APS is scheduled to host a public meeting on October 14 to discuss its 2026 Integrated Resource Plan. This document outlines the company's strategy for meeting energy demand over the next 15 years.
The Sierra Club has criticized the extension, citing concerns over air pollution, water usage, and potential cost increases for ratepayers. The organization previously gave APS an F grade in its Dirty Truth Report.
