Apple has updated its official developer documentation for Reference Images, focusing on improving image tracking and virtual-physical integration in ARKit and spatial computing applications. The guide details how the system identifies and anchors real-world 2D images to trigger 3D models, videos, or animations.
The documentation specifies that optimal reference images should feature high contrast, irregular textures, and numerous unique visual points. Apple warns that images with solid colors, repetitive patterns, or blurred edges can lead to tracking errors or system failure during recognition.
Developers are advised to use matte or non-reflective materials for physical markers to avoid interference from glare or reflections. Furthermore, the guide emphasizes the necessity of inputting precise physical dimensions into Xcode, as discrepancies between code and reality cause spatial distortion.
To streamline development, Apple encourages the use of the built-in Xcode assessment tool, which scores image trackability and provides quality warnings. These updates aim to reduce debugging time and improve the stability of AR experiences across iPhone, iPad, and spatial computing devices.
