Apple has introduced the AirPods 5, which will be available in stores starting September 18. The base model is priced at $129, while the version with a wireless charging case costs $149. Preorders for the new devices are currently open.
The new model features active noise cancellation that reportedly blocks up to 50 percent more noise than the previous generation. This is achieved through a new multiport acoustic architecture and updated computational audio algorithms. Additionally, the transparency mode has been improved to allow for more natural hearing of ambient sounds.
The AirPods 5 include adaptive audio that automatically switches between noise cancellation and transparency modes based on the environment. A conversation awareness feature detects when the user is speaking and lowers the media volume accordingly. Apple also optimized the sound quality to better fit a wider range of ear shapes.
The base battery life provides up to five hours of playback with active noise cancellation enabled, which is one hour longer than the predecessor. The charging case extends the total listening time to 22 hours and supports USB-C, Qi-compatible chargers, and Apple Watch chargers. The premium model adds a touch-sensitive volume control on the stem.
Integration with Apple Intelligence brings new features to the AirPods 5. Users can utilize live translation and interact with Siri through head gestures, such as nodding for yes or shaking for no, to respond to prompts.
