Apple plans to revise the Full Disk Access mechanism in macOS to address security concerns related to AI agents. The company aims to make the permission process more transparent, ensuring users explicitly confirm access to sensitive data like emails, messages, and browser history.
The current Full Disk Access feature, originally designed for backup software, is being scrutinized as some developers reportedly obscure the scope of requested permissions. Apple warns that as AI agents gain more autonomy, the risks associated with broad system access will continue to rise.
The announcement follows public discussions regarding Meta Muse, an AI agent capable of performing tasks on a user's computer. While columnist Jason Aten raised concerns about Muse accessing his private messages without explicit consent, Meta stated that users must manually grant Full Disk Access and specific app permissions.
Apple has not yet disclosed specific technical details or a timeline for these changes. The company emphasizes the need for clearer user authorization to prevent unauthorized data exposure as AI systems become more integrated into desktop environments.
