Apple has officially launched the iPhone 18 series, revealing a split in hardware configurations for 5G modems across different markets. The US version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only model in the lineup equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 5G modem.

In contrast, the US version of the iPhone 18 Pro and all Pro and Pro Max models sold in other global markets now feature Apple's proprietary C2 5G modem. Firmware analysis confirms the US iPhone 18 Pro Max uses the X80 chip, rather than the newer X85 solution.

Apple's proprietary C2 modem offers approximately 15% better energy efficiency compared to previous generations. It also integrates AI-based cellular signal optimization and system-level location privacy features, marking a significant shift toward in-house hardware.

The decision to retain Qualcomm chips in a single US model stems from a 2023 agreement between Apple and Qualcomm, which mandates the supply of 5G modems until 2026. This strategy allows Apple to fulfill its contractual obligations while transitioning most devices to its own architecture.

Independent testing agencies are expected to compare the network throughput and power consumption of the US iPhone 18 Pro Max against international models equipped with the C2 modem. These tests aim to evaluate performance differences in extreme network conditions.
