Apple recently unveiled the iPhone Duo, a foldable device that has sparked significant discussion among developers and former Microsoft employees. The device features a form factor and usage scenarios, such as multi-tasking and stylus integration, that closely mirror the concepts Microsoft introduced with the Surface Duo in 2020.

Matt Velloso, a former technical advisor to Satya Nadella, noted that the launch has reignited debates over whether Microsoft abandoned its dual-screen project too early. Microsoft officially canceled its Surface Duo product line in 2023, citing poor market performance and challenges in building a robust developer ecosystem as primary reasons for the discontinuation.

During its development, the Surface Duo struggled with software optimization and limited app support, which hindered its potential. In contrast, developers are already creating applications for the iPhone Duo despite the device not yet being officially available for sale. Observers point out that Microsoft held a multi-year head start in hardware and software research.

The naming of the new Apple device has also drawn attention, with former Microsoft staff expressing mixed feelings about the use of the 'Duo' branding. Microsoft Vice President Scott Hanselman commented on the situation, while other industry figures highlighted a recurring pattern where Microsoft pioneers new product categories only for other companies to achieve market success later.
