Apple has released the first beta version of Xcode 27.1, providing developers with the necessary tools to adapt applications for the iPhone Duo. This release includes the Swift 6.4 language, along with updated SDKs for iOS 27.1 and iPadOS 27.1, specifically designed to support the company's first foldable smartphone.
The new Xcode environment features a dedicated Display group within the Canvas interface, allowing developers to preview app layouts across different screen configurations. Additionally, the update includes an iPhone Duo simulator to test compatibility with various screen orientations and display modes.
Despite these new capabilities, the simulator currently has limitations, such as the unavailability of the StandBy feature and restricted support for most app extensions. Furthermore, the initial loading time for the simulator can take several minutes, which may impact the development workflow.
Developers are working under a tight timeline, as the tools were provided after the official announcement of the device. With pre-orders starting on October 16 and the official launch scheduled for October 23, teams have approximately one month to optimize their software for the new hardware.
While most existing applications are expected to run on the iPhone Duo, they may not fully utilize the foldable screen's potential without specific updates. Large software vendors, including Adobe and Microsoft, may face challenges in completing these complex optimizations by the device's release date.
