Apple is preparing to launch its first smart home hub, potentially named HomeView or HomePad, with an expected release date of October 13. The device will be available in two versions: a wall-mounted model (codenamed J491) and a desktop model (codenamed J490). Both variants feature a 6-inch square display with 6.35 mm bezels.
The desktop version includes a circular metal base and an adjustable metal arm, reminiscent of the iMac G4 design, while the wall-mounted version houses speakers and microphones in a slim base. Both models are powered via USB-C, lack internal batteries, and include a 1080p camera for FaceTime, user identification, and gesture control.
The hub will run on a new operating system, possibly called homeOS, which integrates elements from tvOS, watchOS, and iOS. To support Apple Intelligence, the device is expected to feature an A18 or higher chip paired with at least 8GB of RAM. It will come pre-installed with core apps like Safari, Apple Music, and Calendar, but will not have a dedicated App Store.
Security features include voice authentication and secondary verification via iPhone, as the built-in camera does not support full Face ID. The device also includes proximity sensors that adjust the display based on user distance and support for a guest mode to protect personal data. The product will be available in silver, space gray, starlight, and rose gold.
