Apple is developing a new AR headset, internally codenamed N224, which aims to offer flagship performance in a lighter form factor. The company plans to release this device between late 2028 and early 2029.

Engineers are currently evaluating four different design concepts. One approach involves moving computing components and the battery into an external unit, similar to the design of Meta VR glasses. This would reduce the weight of the headset frame and headband.

Internal discussions at Apple remain ongoing regarding the final design. Some executives advocate for maintaining a monolithic structure, where all components are housed within the device itself. To achieve this, the company is experimenting with new materials to reduce overall weight.

Future performance improvements in Apple processors may allow for lower heat generation. This shift could potentially eliminate the need for an active cooling system in future iterations of the Vision Pro, further simplifying the hardware design.
