Apple has extended the free trial period for its satellite communication services by one additional year for existing users of the iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 series. This policy applies to devices activated before midnight Pacific Time on September 9, 2026, in regions where the service is supported.
The extension will be applied automatically, with the free access period for eligible devices extended until the autumn of 2027. New customers purchasing the latest iPhone models will continue to receive the standard complimentary access upon device activation as per the existing company policy.
First introduced in 2022 with the iPhone 14, the satellite feature relies on the Globalstar network to provide connectivity in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. The service initially launched for Emergency SOS and has since expanded to include location sharing via Find My, roadside assistance, and satellite text messaging.
This marks the third time Apple has extended the free trial for its satellite capabilities. While the company faces significant infrastructure costs for bandwidth and ground station maintenance, it has yet to implement a commercial subscription model, opting instead to maintain the service as a complimentary safety feature for its ecosystem.
