Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, acknowledged that the new iPhone Duo may overlap with the iPad mini in functionality. He noted that the device could satisfy usage needs previously met by the smaller tablet, particularly for reading and multitasking.

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch external display and a 7.6-inch internal folding screen. This hardware design allows the device to function as a compact smartphone when folded and as a larger display for content consumption when unfolded, closely approaching the 8.3-inch screen size of the iPad mini.

Apple redesigned the iOS experience specifically for the folding form factor to optimize layout and information density. Federighi compared this transition to the historical relationship between the iPad and the Mac, where users eventually developed distinct habits for each device despite functional overlaps.

The iPhone Duo is priced starting at $1,999. While it offers a combined mobile and tablet experience, Apple maintains that the iPad mini retains advantages in professional applications, handwriting, and long-term large-screen tasks, and the company has not announced plans to discontinue the iPad mini line.
