Apple has confirmed that the nano-texture protective layer on the iPhone Duo's inner foldable screen is a replaceable component. This layer is designed to reduce the visibility of the screen crease and minimize reflections, rather than being a standard screen protector.
The component consists of a custom polymer material that is approximately 40% more rigid than standard industry alternatives. It is part of a complex 10-layer display structure that includes high-strength glass and a titanium base plate to manage mechanical stress during folding.
Users with an AppleCare+ plan can have this layer replaced for $19. While Apple has not disclosed the cost for users without the plan, the company clarified that the replacement process is intended to be performed by Apple Stores or authorized service providers.
The iPhone Duo is priced starting at $2999. Pre-orders for the device are scheduled to begin on October 16, with the official market launch following on October 23.
This modular approach to the screen's outer layer aims to mitigate long-term wear and tear on the display surface. However, Apple notes that replacing the layer does not repair permanent physical deformations in the underlying OLED panel caused by repeated folding.
