The repairability score for the Apple AirPods 5 is 2 out of 10, according to a teardown report published by iFixit on September 30. This marks the first time in a decade that an AirPods model has received a non-zero score, as previous versions consistently scored 0 since the product line debuted in 2016.

The improved rating is attributed to the ability to remove and replace the batteries without causing damage to the device. However, iFixit noted that the batteries for the left and right earbuds are not interchangeable due to differences in polarity and contact placement.

Despite the score, the repair process remains complex and is recommended only for skilled professionals or experienced DIY enthusiasts. Attempting deeper repairs or opening the charging case typically results in destructive disassembly, maintaining a high barrier for general maintenance.

The teardown process included CT scans, which revealed a highly integrated internal layout. The device features a dense arrangement of components, including the H2 chip, MEMS microphones, and batteries, all packed into a compact space.
