Apple has officially acquired Sonera, a California-based startup specializing in biomagnetic sensing technology. The European Commission disclosed the transaction, which took place earlier this year. Both companies have opted not to reveal the financial details or specific terms of the deal.
The startup focuses on non-invasive technology capable of measuring magnetic fields generated by the human body and brain. Unlike traditional electrode-based methods, this approach does not require direct skin contact to analyze neural data, offering potential for more flexible wearable designs.
Sonera previously developed a biomagnetic chip designed for advanced prosthetic control, monitoring neuromuscular diseases, and tracking athletic performance. The company aimed to make brain activity measurement as accessible as tracking heart rate or body temperature.
Industry analysts suggest that this acquisition could enhance future health monitoring and accessibility features on Apple devices. While there is speculation that the technology might eventually be integrated into the Apple Watch, the company has not yet announced any specific product plans.
