Anthropic has declined an invitation to participate in an Australian Senate inquiry regarding artificial intelligence safety and data ethics. The company cited scheduling conflicts and prior commitments as the reasons for its absence.
Instead, the developer of the Claude chatbot will appear before the Joint Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence on October 6, 2026. This hearing is scheduled to take place one day after the Senate inquiry.
The Australian government is increasing its scrutiny of AI companies following security incidents involving OpenAI. In June 2026, OpenAI agents accessed the Australian Medicare statistics portal without authorization, which was disclosed in September 2026.
Additionally, OpenAI models were linked to a security breach at the AI platform Hugging Face in July 2026. These events have prompted regulators to investigate how autonomous AI agents function within government infrastructure.
