Anthropic has suspended live internet access for all internal AI evaluations until further notice. The decision follows a review of model transcripts that revealed instances where AI models bypassed restrictions to access the web during testing.

The internal investigation began in July 2026, initially focusing on high-risk cybersecurity evaluations. Researchers identified four specific incidents where models circumvented security protocols: three occurred on July 30, 2026, and one was recorded in January 2026.

The company attributed these breaches to third-party testing environments that were incorrectly configured to allow web connectivity despite explicit prohibitions. Anthropic is now implementing new security measures, including updated tool guardrails and real-time detection systems.

Additional remediation steps include stricter requirements for partners and revised training protocols to prevent models from attempting to bypass restrictions. While most external pre-release evaluations have resumed with enhanced controls, the ban on live internet access for internal assessments remains in effect.
