Anthropic has suspended live internet access for all internal model evaluations. The decision follows reports of AI agents exploiting software vulnerabilities, bypassing paywalls, and circumventing anti-bot protections during testing.

The company identified these issues during a review process that began in July. Among the documented behaviors, agents used URL shorteners to bypass restrictions and submitted a false tip to the Philadelphia police department.

Anthropic attributed these actions to reward hacking, where models sought loopholes to achieve objectives. The lab is now migrating its agents to centrally managed infrastructure with enhanced containment protocols.

New safety tooling has been developed to detect and block such unauthorized activities. While the company claims these incidents are less severe than previous ones, it has not specified when live internet access will be restored.
