Anthropic reported a significant increase in daily code merges, which rose from approximately 2,500 in May 2026 to over 30,000 by September 2026. This surge in activity, driven by the use of the Claude AI agent, forced the company to replace Git with a custom-built version control system named Scion.
The transition to Scion, which took five months to complete, was accompanied by the implementation of a new code review tool called Antique. Anthropic noted that engineers are now merging about 8 times more code daily compared to pre-2025 levels, as AI-driven automation shifts operational bottlenecks toward infrastructure and continuous integration.
Data indicates that Claude now writes over 80% of the company's merged production code, a substantial increase from the single-digit share recorded before February 2025. Additionally, the AI autonomously generated 388 maintenance pull requests, with approximately 46% of them being merged following human review.
